Japan’s Princess Kako has visited a charity bazaar in Tokyo hosted by the Ladies’ Friendship Association for Africa and the Middle East.

The bazaar, held biennially since 1981, raises funds to support those regions.

Princess Kako, the younger daughter of Crown Prince Akishino, on Tuesday visited the venue, where embassies and other diplomatic establishments from 25 countries in the Middle East and Africa had set up booths.

At the booth for Togo, a country in western Africa, the princess was shown traditional women’s clothing and ornaments. She reportedly picked up a piece of fabric and commented that it was very beautiful.

At the booth for Malawi in southeastern Africa, the princess reportedly said in English that the wooden animal carvings on display were cute.

The princess walked around the venue and purchased several items that were recommended to her or that she liked.

Members of the Imperial family have attended the bazaar in the past.

The proceeds will be used to run local orphanages and to support initiatives that promote women’s empowerment.
