Brother of Japanese woman abducted to North Korea speaks at junior high school

Wednesday marks 23 years since five Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea were returned to Japan. However, other abductees including Yokota Megumi remain unaccounted for.

A brother of Megumi has spoken to students about the issue. He urged them to think about the abduction as if it happened to them.

Yokota Takuya, who heads a group of Japanese abductees’ families, delivered a speech on Wednesday to about 400 students at a junior high school in Tokyo.

His elder sister Megumi was abducted in 1977 when she was a first-year junior high school student.

Hasuike Kaoru and his wife Yukiko, Chimura Yasushi and his wife Fukie, and Soga Hitomi were abducted to North Korea in 1978. The five returned to Japan on October 15, 2002. Among the abductees recognized by the Japanese government, 12 people are still unaccounted for.

During his speech, Yokota showed a photo that is said to have been taken soon after she was abducted. He said he had never seen such a sad, painful and lonely expression on his sister’s face. He posed a question to the audience about what Megumi is telling the students with her eyes. He said he wants them to think about it as if the situation were their own.

Yokota pointed out that her 89-year-old mother, Yokota Sakie, is the only surviving parent among the government-recognized abductees whose whereabouts remain unknown.

He said: “Mother Sakie is in good health today, but her age means she might not be well tomorrow. Listening to our voices will help people not to forget the issue and not to let it fade away.”

After Yokota’s speech, a student said what Yokota said was terrifying and beyond her imagination. She also said she wants to help resolve the issue by collecting signatures and taking other actions.

Yokota said it is frustrating that no one else is able to return home, as 23 years have passed since the five returned to Japan. He called for all-out efforts by the government to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

北朝鮮に拉致された日本人女性・横田めぐみさんの弟が、中学生に向けて講演を行いました。

水曜日は、北朝鮮に拉致された5人の日本人が帰国してから23年にあたります。
しかし、めぐみさんを含む他の拉致被害者はいまだに行方不明のままです。

横田めぐみさんの弟であり、拉致被害者家族連絡会の代表を務める横田拓也さんは、
東京都内の中学校で約400人の生徒を前に講演を行いました。

彼の姉であるめぐみさんは、1977年、中学1年生のときに拉致されました。

1978年には、蓮池薫さん夫妻、地村保志さん夫妻、曽我ひとみさんの5人が拉致され、
2002年10月15日に帰国しました。
しかし、政府が認定する拉致被害者のうち**12人はいまだ行方不明のまま（are still unaccounted for）**です。

講演で横田さんは、拉致直後に撮られたとされる写真を見せ、
「こんなに悲しく、つらく、寂しそうな表情は見たことがない」と語りました。
そして「もし自分だったら」と考えてほしいと訴えました。

また、89歳になる母親・横田早紀江さんが、いまだ行方不明の拉致被害者の親の中で唯一存命であることも伝えました。

「母は今は元気ですが、明日どうなるかわからない年齢です。
私たちの声を聞くことで、この問題を忘れず、風化させないでほしい」と語りました。

講演を聞いた女子生徒は「恐ろしくて想像もできなかった。でも、自分にもできることを探して署名活動などで協力したい」と話しました。

横田さんは「5人が帰国してから23年も経つのに、誰も帰ってこられないのは本当に悔しい」と語り、
政府に対し、早期解決に向けた全力の取り組みを呼びかけました。
