Flu season starts early across Japan
Japanese health authorities say the influenza season has begun across the country. It arrived more than a month earlier than last year.

The health ministry said the number of flu patients reported by more than 3,000 medical institutions nationwide in the week through September 28 was 4,030. This is an increase of 957 from the previous week.

The average number of flu patients per institution was 1.04. A figure above 1 indicates the onset of the flu season.

By prefecture, the average stood at 8.98 in Okinawa, 1.96 in Tokyo and 1.68 in Kagoshima. It exceeded 1 in 15 prefectures. Compared with the previous week, 28 prefectures reported increases.

This is the second-earliest start of a flu season following 2009 since the current survey method began in 1999. The comparison excludes 2023, when the flu continued to spread throughout the year.

The health ministry is urging people to take precautions, such as wearing masks, and to consider getting vaccinated.
