US President Donald Trump says he has canceled a planned meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The US government has also slapped sanctions against major Russian oil firms to ramp up pressure on Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Trump told reporters on Wednesday that he had called off the summit with Putin, saying it “didn’t feel right to me.” He added, “So I canceled it.”
The Hungarian capital Budapest had been floated as a venue for the possible summit.
Trump also said the only thing he can say is that every time he speaks with Putin, he has good conversations and then “they don’t go anywhere.”
The US Treasury Department announced on Wednesday that it was imposing further sanctions on the two largest Russian oil companies. It said Rosneft and Lukoil “fund the Kremlin’s war machine.”
The department said the assets held by the two firms in the United States are frozen, and transactions with them are generally prohibited. It is calling on US allies to join in the sanctions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, “Now is the time to stop the killing and for an immediate ceasefire.”
US media say these are the first sanctions imposed against Russia during Trump’s second term.
Trump said these are “tremendous sanctions.” He said he hopes Putin will “become reasonable” and that the war will be settled.
