PM Takaichi sets priorities in first news conference
Japan’s new prime minister addressed the nation for the first time Tuesday night.
Takaichi Sanae highlighted her priorities including the economy and working with the opposition.Takaichi said that she will create a strong Japanese economy and protect national interests through diplomacy and national security policies.
She said that she will try to form a majority in the Diet to stabilize the political situation. And she stressed that, so long as they share her beliefs, she will continue calling on the opposition parties to cooperate.
Takaichi said that policies such as tackling rising prices, making a back-up capital region for Japan, overhauling social security, and reforming the Constitution are based on the agreement between the Liberal Democratic Party and the Japan Innovation Party.
As for the economy, Takaichi vowed to tackle rising prices. That includes quickly abolishing the provisional gasoline tax rate. She also stressed she will listen to the opposition and raise the tax-free income threshold, to leave more money in people’s pockets.
Turning to foreign policy, she says she will soon meet US President Donald Trump to further strengthen Japan-US relations. She stressed the alliance is the cornerstone of Japan’s foreign and national security policies.
