US praise for Japan’s new leader

Political figures in the United States congratulated Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae on her victory on Tuesday.

US Ambassador to Japan George Glass said the two countries’ ties will “reach new heights” under the leadership of Takaichi and President Donald Trump.

Republican Senator Bill Hagerty from Tennessee said he has no doubt she will get along well with Trump. He noted that is because she is a protege of late Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, who was close to Trump. Hagerty served as ambassador to Japan during the president’s last term.

Takaichi interned in the Congress in the late 1980s. She worked for Democratic Representative Patricia Schroeder, who was the first woman to represent Colorado.

Kip Cheroutes was the communications director in Denver then. He remembered Takaichi closely observing how women worked in the political arena, as if she were envisioning her own future.

He said, “Pat Schroeder knew that she was being a mentor to Sanae, and that as a woman coming up with ambitions to be a politician, Pat Schroeder wanted to show her how she operated.”

He said he wants to see Takaichi connect with young women and girls as the country’s first female prime minister.

Cheroutes added: “Just remember that you are prime minister of the people. You’re not just a geopolitical leader. So those, that would be the advice I would give her.”

Takaichi is set to meet with Trump during his visit next week.
