Japan’s ruling LDP holds talks over possible coalition with JIP
Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party and the opposition Japan Innovation Party have held talks over forming a possible coalition government.
LDP President Takaichi Sanae met with JIP officials on Thursday. The two sides confirmed their common ground on basic policies, such as the Constitution, foreign affairs and national security.
But JIP Co-Representative Fujita Fumitake told reporters they did not reach an agreement on several issues. These include a temporary abolition of the consumption tax on food items and a ban on political donations by corporations and groups.
Fujita also said Takaichi asked the JIP to form a full-scale coalition government with the LDP. This means that JIP members would join the cabinet. The two parties will continue discussions on Friday.
“I feel they are very serious about working together,” Fujita said. “I think President Takaichi and I have similar views and that’s helping us build a relationship of trust.”
LDP Policy Research Council Chairperson Kobayashi Takayuki added, “We have confirmed that the two parties are in agreement on basic policies that will serve as the foundation of national governance.”
The JIP is also involved in partnership talks within the opposition. The party secretary-general met with his counterparts from the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and the Democratic Party for the People on Thursday. They are now waiting for the conclusion of the direct talks between the JIP and LDP before deciding whether to continue discussions.
The CDP leader stressed the importance of keeping the LDP out of power.
“We can’t join up with a party that people are saying only settled the money and politics issue for the sake of two or three policy goals,” said Constitutional Democratic Party President Noda Yoshihiko. “I won’t give up and will create chances for the leaders of the three opposition parties to hold talks.”
The Diet will convene an extraordinary session on Tuesday. The LDP wants to hold the prime minister vote on that day. But the opposition parties say they are not yet ready to discuss the timing.
