Pacific saury festival held in Kesennuma, northeastern Japan
An event was held in the city of Kesennuma in northeastern Japan on Saturday in which participants were able to enjoy grilled Pacific saury for free.
The festival, at a tourist facility near Kesennuma fishing port in Miyagi Prefecture, was the first in six years.
The facility was destroyed by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, but it was rebuilt in 2014.
The festival at the facility was canceled for five years, from 2020 until 2024, due to the coronavirus pandemic and poor catches.
Saturday’s event took place amid large saury catches in waters around the country.
One-thousand freshly caught saury, each weighing about 150 grams, were grilled and handed out for free.
Visitors who paid 1,000 yen, or about 6 dollars and 50 cents, could take home as many saury as they could grab with both hands from a tank of ice water. Some people caught more than 20.
The Kesennuma fishery cooperative says saury landings this year had reached about 2,600 tons as of Friday, more than triple the amount for the same period last year.
A man in his 40s from Osaki City in the prefecture described the saury as large, rich in fat and delicious. He said he is grateful for the big catches because he enjoys eating saury.
Abe Yasuhiro, who heads the organization that holds the event, said organizers had difficulty keeping up with the demand for grilled fish as there were more visitors than expected. He said he hopes the event will continue every year.
