Toyota tests AI-based driver-assistance system

Toyota Motor has demonstrated a driver-assistance system that it says uses AI to prevent traffic accidents.
The firm has teamed up with telecom giant NTT to help develop the communication infrastructure needed.

Toyota tested the technology at a research facility in central Japan on Monday.

It involved a car merging onto an expressway as the system analyzed the locations and speeds of other vehicles.
The information was collected via sensors and cameras installed in the road.
AI then analyzed the data and sent it to the car’s onboard device.

The car then automatically adjusted its speed and steering to enter the expressway.

Toyota is also testing the technology to warn drivers of potential dangers, such as pedestrians suddenly running out onto a street.

Toyota hopes to reduce accidents not just by predicting such dangers but also by encouraging people to change their behaviors, said the head of Toyota’s Software Development Center, Sarada Akihiro.

The automaker aims to start introducing the technologies in its vehicles from around 2028.
