Disaster response event marks 2005 Pakistan quake anniversary

It is now 20 years since a devastating earthquake in northern Pakistan claimed the lives of more than 70,000 people.

To mark the anniversary, Japan’s overseas aid agency has used expertise gained from the country’s frequent earthquakes to teach Pakistani students about disaster response.

About 90 junior high school students took part in an event organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency at a school in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Some students competed to see who could shout for help the loudest, while others took part in quizzes about the damage caused by previous earthquakes and floods in Pakistan.

Participants also learned how to use bamboo poles and a blanket as a makeshift stretcher.

One student said, “We usually study about natural disasters from books, but today we learned through practical experience.”

While there has been widespread reconstruction since the quake, the lack of disaster preparedness remains an issue.

JICA Pakistan Office Representative Ojima Naohiro said, “We have received many requests to learn from Japan’s experience. I hope we can continue this grassroots initiative to raise awareness of disaster preparedness.”
