South Korea: Pyongyang fired several ballistic missiles
The South Korean military has announced that North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles from an inland location in a northeasterly direction.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch occurred around 8:10 a.m. on Wednesday, and that the missiles traveled about 350 kilometers.
Yonhap News Agency has reported that the missiles appear to have come down inland.
It is the first ballistic missile launch since May, when Pyongyang test-fired a Hwasong-11 short-range ballistic missile as part of a drill that also involved other systems.
The launch comes after North Korea staged a military parade on October 10 to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party. Pyongyang used that occasion to tout its nuclear and missile developments by showing off a variety of ballistic missiles.
South Korea is set to host a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation next week. World leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, are expected to visit the country.
The North appears to have staged the launch at a time when the Korean Peninsula is the focus of international attention.
The ballistic missile launch is the first since South Korean President Lee Jae-myung took office in June.
Japan’s new Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae spoke to reporters shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Prime Minister’s Office.
She said Japan, the United States and South Korea are working together to share real-time data of missile warnings, and making every effort to respond to the situation.
She added that her government is fully on top of developments regarding the launch.
Takaichi said she had confirmed that the missiles had not flown over Japan’s territorial waters or exclusive economic zone. She added that there have been no reports of damage.
