Tokyo conference agrees to speed up demining efforts in Ukraine
Participants at an international conference in Tokyo have stressed the need to accelerate measures to remove land mines in Ukraine.
The Japanese government organized the gathering to support mine removal — an urgent issue as Ukraine remains under attack from Russia.
On Wednesday, the first day of the meeting, senior government officials and representatives of international organizations discussed ways to promote demining in Ukraine.
They compiled a document summarizing their discussions, reaffirming the importance of training experts and encouraging investment in research and development of demining technologies, including artificial intelligence, drones and advanced sensors.
Oleksii Sobolev, Ukraine’s minister of economy, environment and agriculture, told NHK that global access to Ukrainian food has been hindered because much of the country’s mine-infested land is farmland.
Sobolev thanked Japan for its assistance and said he hopes Japan’s new government will continue and expand its support for demining and recovery efforts.
