Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo celebrates Giant Panda Day
Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo celebrated on Tuesday “Giant Panda Day,” which marks the arrival of two of the animals from China 53 years ago.
Beijing presented the pair of giant pandas to Ueno Zoological Gardens on October 28, 1972, to commemorate the normalization of ties between China and Japan.
The animals have remained popular to this day. Visitors flocked to the zoo from the morning on Tuesday to catch a glimpse of the twins, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei. They enjoyed watching the huge animals walking around in their enclosure and eating carrots and bamboo.
About 30 people also traveled from Japan to a conservation and research center in Sichuan Province, China, to see the twins’ sister Xiang Xiang, who was born at Ueno Zoo.
She was transferred to China in 2023 under an ownership agreement between the two countries. Her caretakers say Xiang Xiang is now 8 years old and weighs 105 kilograms, about 20 kilograms more than when she arrived at the facility.
When Xiang Xiang came outside from her enclosure, the fans from Japan enjoyed their reunion, taking pictures and watching her eat bamboo.
A man in his 60s from Tokyo said Xiang Xiang is adorable and that his heart was filled with joy when he saw her. He said he always feels blissful no matter how many times he visits.

東京都内から訪れた60代の男性は「シャンシャンは本当にかわいくて、会えて胸がいっぱいになった」と話し、「何度訪れても、いつも幸せな気持ちになります」と語りました。
