NHK documentary on Sakamoto Ryuichi wins top prize at Prix Italia competition

An NHK documentary about renowned Japanese musician and composer Sakamoto Ryuichi has won the top prize in an international competition for broadcasters, organized by Italian public broadcaster RAI.

The award ceremony for the 2025 Prix Italia took place on Friday in the southern Italian city of Naples. It is one of the world’s most prestigious international contests for radio, television, and digital productions.

NHK’s “Ryuichi Sakamoto: Last Days” was awarded the Special Prize in Honour of the President of the Italian Republic. The prize goes to the best work of all the entries.

The documentary followed the final days of Sakamoto Ryuichi, who died in 2023, with diaries and private footage provided by his bereaved family.

It also won the top prize in the category of TV Performing Arts.

The jury said the film’s tonality balances at a very fine line and never becomes melodramatic or sentimental, but just stays true to Sakamoto’s rare and giving personality in a very respectful and sensitive way.

They also said the program allows viewers to sense the importance and effect of art and music in Sakamoto’s life, instead of being a film about death and sorrow.
