Autumn foliage in Okunikko at best for viewing

The autumn foliage has arrived in Okunikko, Tochigi Prefecture, in eastern Japan, as the leaves on trees surrounding Lake Chuzenji turned crimson and gold.

The lake in the city of Nikko is located at an elevation of about 1,200 meters. The area is renowned for its autumn foliage.

On Monday, visitors flocked to the area to enjoy the colorful leaves of maple, birch and other trees covering the mountainside.

The operator of sightseeing boats on the lake has increased its services for the season.

A woman who traveled from western Japan told reporters that she enjoyed seeing the vibrant colors.

Officials of the Nikko Natural Science Museum say the peak season at the lake began about a week later than usual, and will continue until early next month.
