Anker’s Japan unit to recall mobile batteries, speakers due to fire risks
The Japanese unit of Chinese manufacturer Anker says it will recall mobile batteries and three types of speakers sold in Japan, citing potential fire risks.
Anker Japan announced on Tuesday that the voluntary recall covers more than 520,000 units of the four products that were sold between December 2022 and October 21 this year.
The company says some lithium-ion batteries used in those products may contain tiny foreign particles that went into the manufacturing process. It adds that this could lead to an internal short circuit and cause a fire if the products continue to be used.
Anker Japan says it sincerely apologizes for the great concern and inconvenience this may have caused.
The company asks users to check if their item is subject to the recall by entering the product’s serial number in the online recall form on its website.
Japan’s economy and industry ministry says Anker Japan has reported 41 serious cases since last year when its products caught fire.
The ministry also says a total of more than 1 million units of the company’s products have been subject to its voluntary recalls since 2019.
The ministry has given Anker Japan administrative guidance, calling on the maker to check all products sold in Japan that use lithium-ion batteries.
