British Prince Andrew stripped of royal title amid alleged sexual abuse scandal
Buckingham Palace says it has initiated a formal process of stripping Prince Andrew of his title of “prince”, amid mounting criticism over his alleged involvement in a sexual abuse scandal.
Local media are providing extensive coverage of the announcement. They say the stripping of a princely title is very rare in British royal legal history.
Prince Andrew, a younger brother of King Charles, allegedly had close ties with Jeffrey Epstein, an American financier, who was indicted on charges including sexual abuse of minors and died in prison. Andrew is suspected of having sex with a girl when she was 17 years old.
He has denied the allegation, but gave up his official duties in 2019. He announced earlier this month that he would no longer use the title of Duke of York.
But criticism has continued, fueled by the publication of a posthumous memoir of an American woman. The book describes details of her allegations against Andrew, including that they had sex when she was a teenager.
Buckingham Palace issued a statement on Thursday.
It says that King Charles “has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.”
The statement also says he is to leave his Windsor mansion, Royal Lodge. It goes on to say, “These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.”
It concludes by saying, “Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”
