High school students on Japan’s southwestern island of Amami-Oshima have taken a special class to learn how to wear kimonos made of Oshima Tsumugi, a traditional silk fabric produced locally.
Amami High School in Kagoshima Prefecture holds kimono dressing lessons for third-year students every year. The aim is to help them rediscover the beauty of the fabric and carry on the island’s textile culture.
Twelve students took part in the class on Wednesday. They first changed into long undergarments before learning from an instructor about the correct steps and techniques for putting on a kimono.
The students struggled with the unfamiliar process of tying the obi belt, but soon managed to dress neatly in kimonos — some featuring auspicious patterns and others with designs inspired by local cycads. Once dressed, they enjoyed taking photos of themselves.
One student said Oshima Tsumugi feels smoother and more comfortable than ordinary kimono fabric. She said she was happy to learn how to wear a kimono using a traditional craft from her hometown.
Another student said it was his first time tying an obi belt and that it was difficult at first, but he managed with the teacher’s help.
He said he wants to wear an Oshima Tsumugi kimono for his coming-of-age ceremony and share its charm with more people.
