Athletes in Ibaraki, Japan compete in ‘toughest’ survival race
In Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, athletes are competing in a unique survival race that combines both mountain biking and trail running.
Local authorities in Ibaraki Prefecture organized a two-day event called Okukuji “X” as part of their efforts to promote this mountainous region in the north of the prefecture.
In Mito City, around 130 athletes started off on their bicycles early Saturday morning from the Otemon Gate of Mito Castle.
The 125-kilometer route that leads close to the famed Fukuroda Falls includes steep uphill slopes with inclines of more than 13 percent.
Local delicacies of onigiri rice balls made with locally grown rice and soba noodles were served to athletes at a rest stop along the route.
In the trail run segment on Sunday, the second day, the athletes are expected to run a distance of 54 kilometers.
The winner will be decided by combining the records of the two portions. The prizes include 100 kilograms of Ibaraki’s Hitachi-gyu brand beef.
A man in his 40s from Saitama Prefecture decided to take part because this kind of race is quite rare. He said he hopes to be able to complete it.
The prefectural government touts the event as the toughest survival race in Japan. One official in charge said the race is unique in that it is difficult to finish as it combines both cycling and running.
The official added they hope that someday it will become a major competition representing Japan.
