World record for most people decorating gingerbread houses set in Japanese city
A project in a western Japanese city has set a world record for the “most people decorating gingerbread houses simultaneously.”
Guinness World Records gave the recognition at an event in Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, on Sunday.
Legend has it that Kainan is the country’s first place to be planted with tachibana, which is said to be both the ancestor of mikan mandarin oranges and the origin of Japanese sweets.
A total of 282 people ranging from children to adults gathered to establish the record. Each participant received a miniature gingerbread house.
They tried to decorate the houses at the same time within 15 minutes. Items they could use included chocolate and dried mikan as well as frosting to depict snow on walls and roofs.
The number of participants officially judged to have completed the decoration came to 279.
An elementary school student who took part in the project said placing frosting was hard, but that it was fun to do the decoration with others. She added that she is happy to have achieved the world record.
A member of a civic group that planned the event said she wants to use the record to further advance efforts to promote Kainan as a city of confectionery.

イベントを企画した市民団体のメンバーは、「この記録をきっかけに、海南を“お菓子の街”としてさらに盛り上げていきたい」と話しました。
