Japanese airlines warn of mobile battery fire risk

Japanese airlines are warning passengers not to put power banks in their bags due to the risk of fire. Inspectors at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport detected about 20,000 items with lithium-ion batteries in checked baggage for domestic flights in fiscal 2024.

Japan’s transport ministry says security screening is in place for detecting explosives and other onboard threats. But the system cannot always detect lithium batteries, and some may be overlooked.

A Haneda Airport staff member says: “Passengers should make sure there are no mobile batteries in their check-in baggage. If they check them in, they may not be able to fly.”

Power banks can be carried on board, but care should be taken. In January, a plane caught fire while preparing to take off from Busan in South Korea. The fire is believed to have been caused by a power bank in an overhead bin.

In March, there was another suspected power bank fire in an overhead bin of a plane bound for Hong Kong.

Professor Tozaki Hajime of J. F. Oberlin University in Tokyo says: “If there is a fire on a plane, there is no way for the passengers to escape. People need to be aware of the fire risk of power banks.”

The transport ministry began urging people in July to keep power banks close instead of putting them in overhead bins.

日本の航空会社は、**発火の危険（risk of fire）**があるとして、乗客にモバイルバッテリーを預け荷物に入れないよう警告しています。
羽田空港の検査で、2024年度の国内線の預け荷物から約2万個のリチウムイオン電池が見つかりました。

国土交通省によると、爆発物などを検出する保安検査は行われていますが、リチウム電池を常に検出できるわけではなく、見逃される場合もあるということです。

今年1月、韓国・釜山で離陸準備中の飛行機が発火しました。原因は、頭上の荷物入れ（overhead bin）に入れられたモバイルバッテリーだとみられています。

3月にも、香港行きの飛行機で同様にバッテリーによる火災の疑いがありました。

桜美林大学の戸崎肇教授は「機内で火災が起きた場合、乗客は逃げ場がない。モバイルバッテリーの発火リスクをもっと認識する必要があります」と述べています。

国交省は7月から、モバイルバッテリーを頭上の荷物入れに入れず、手元に置くよう呼びかけています。
