Hong Kong journalists say media stepping up self-censorship
A survey by a group of journalists in Hong Kong has found that the level of press freedom in the Chinese territory remains low. The group points out that media outlets have intensified self-censorship since the Hong Kong National Security Law went into effect five years ago.
The Hong Kong Journalists Association released its latest “Press Freedom Index” on Friday. The survey was conducted between August and September.
The ratings of the index stood at 28.9 out of 100, an increase of 3.9 from the record low marked in 2023. The association says the figure does not reflect any substantive improvement.
Hong Kong used to have freedom of the press under the “one country, two systems” framework. But authorities have stepped up clampdowns since the law took effect in 2020 after the massive pro-democracy protests the previous year. Media organizations critical of the government have been forced to shut down.
The association notes that “the chilling effect within society has further intensified the degree of self-censorship” since the introduction of the law.
It also points out that journalists are self-censoring out of personal concerns about “negative repercussions” from their reporting.
