Northeastern Japan sees more bear attacks

People in northeastern Japan are on the alert after a series of bear attacks. The incidents have occurred in places where people lead their daily lives or go to relax.

In Iwate Prefecture, a worker at a hot spring went missing while cleaning an open-air bath. What appeared to be blood stains and bear fur were found nearby. This evidence led police to suspect an attack by a bear.

Earlier this month in Akita Prefecture, a woman in her 80s was taking a walk when a bear pounced on her from behind. She suffered injuries and needed stitches in her face.

The woman said: “It was so sudden. I only remember the feeling that it was a bear. I won’t go out by myself any more. I don’t know where a bear might appear.”

Recently in Akita Prefecture, a man walking his dog and a woman working in a field suffered bear attacks.

Fukushima Prefecture has had its share of similar incidents. A group of three bears mauled a man after he fell off his motorcycle trying to avoid them. Three people were hurt by the animals in the prefecture on the same day.

An NHK survey shows at least 44 people have been attacked by bears in Japan this month.
Seven have been killed since April. This number has already surpassed the record high from 2023.

日本の東北地方では、熊による襲撃事件が相次いでおり、住民たちは警戒を強めています。
事件の多くは、人々が日常生活を送ったり、くつろいだりする場所で発生しています。

岩手県では、温泉施設で露天風呂を清掃していた従業員が行方不明になりました。
近くで血痕と熊の毛のようなものが見つかり、警察は熊の襲撃の可能性が高いとみています。

今月初めには秋田県で80代の女性が散歩中、背後から熊に襲われ顔にけがを負い、縫合治療を受けました。

女性は「本当に突然でした。熊だという感覚しかありません。もう一人では外に出ません。どこに熊が出るかわからないので怖いです」と話しています。

秋田県ではこのほかにも、犬の散歩中の男性や畑仕事中の女性が熊に襲われる被害がありました。

福島県でも同様の被害が相次ぎ、バイクで走行中に熊を避けようとして転倒した男性が、3頭の熊に襲われました。
同じ日に3人が熊に襲われけがをしたということです。

NHKの調査によると、今月に入って少なくとも44人が熊に襲われており、4月以降の死者は7人。
この数字は、2023年の過去最多をすでに上回っているということです。
