Man in Japan arrested for creating and selling sexual deepfake images online
Japanese police have arrested a 31-year-old company worker on suspicion of creating sexually explicit images of female celebrities using generative AI and distributing them online for paying viewers.
The suspect is Yokoi Hiroya from Akita City, northern Japan.
Police say Yokoi is suspected of creating and posting deepfake images of three female celebrities from January to June this year, in violation of a law on distributing obscene digital images.
Police say the suspect created the images using free generative AI software, then sold subscriptions to users through his social media account.
Police say they found what are believed to be obscene deepfakes of 262 female celebrities on a website for the subscribers.
They say the suspect has admitted to the allegations. He reportedly told them he is not an expert on generative AI and learned how to create images from online articles and videos. He said he used the revenue for living expenses and repaying his student debt.
Police believe the suspect made about 1.2 million yen, or about 8,000 dollars, from the subscriptions in the roughly one-year period to September this year.
