Foreign visitors to Japan jump past 30 million in January through September

The number of foreign visitors to Japan from January to September rose to 31.65 million. It is the first time on record the number surpassed 30 million in the first nine months of the year.

The Japan National Tourism Organization says over 3.26 million foreigners entered Japan in September, up 13.7 percent from a year ago and the most ever for the month. The nine-month figure rose 17.7 percent from the same period in 2024.

China accounted for 20 percent at 775,500 for September, up 18.9 percent. Those arriving from South Korea rose 2.1 percent to 670,500 in the period.

On the other hand, visitors from Hong Kong fell 12.2 percent as some arriving and departing flights were canceled for typhoons and other reasons.

The growth in foreign visitors to Japan briefly slowed earlier this year due to an unfounded rumor that a massive disaster would hit Japan. The idea had spread on social media and elsewhere.

But the overall number of foreign visitors to Japan continues to increase because of the weak yen.

Meanwhile, the Japan Tourism Agency says foreign visitors spent an estimated 2.13 trillion yen, or 14.1 billion dollars, in the country from July to September. That’s up 11.1 percent from the same period a year before and the highest figure ever for the period.

1月から9月にかけて日本を訪れた外国人旅行者の数は 3,165万人 に達し、
この期間としては記録上初めて3,000万人を突破しました。

日本政府観光局（JNTO）によると、9月には 326万人以上 の外国人が日本を訪れ、
前年同月比で 13.7％増、月としては過去最多を記録しました。
1月から9月までの累計でも前年同期比 17.7％増 となりました。

国別では、中国が 77万5,500人（全体の20％） と最も多く、前年同月比 18.9％増。
韓国からの訪問者も 2.1％増 の 67万500人 でした。
一方、香港からの旅行者は台風などの影響で一部の便が欠航し、12.2％減少 しました。

年初には「日本で大災害が起きる」という根拠のない噂（unfounded rumor） がSNSなどで広がり、
一時的に訪日外国人の伸びが鈍化しましたが、
円安（weak yen） の影響もあり、全体としては増加傾向が続いています。

また、観光庁によると、7月から9月にかけて外国人旅行者が日本国内で消費した金額は
推定2兆1,300億円（約141億ドル） に上り、
前年同期比 11.1％増 で、この期間としては過去最高を記録しました。
