NHK poll: 52% have expectations for new LDP leader Takaichi

In the latest NHK poll, 52 percent of respondents said they have expectations for the newly elected leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Takaichi Sanae, while 44 percent said they do not.

NHK carried out the telephone survey from Saturday through Monday among people aged 18 and older. A total of 1,205 people, or 42 percent of those contacted, responded.

Of the respondents, 18 percent said they have high expectations for Takaichi, 34 percent have some expectations, 27 percent do not expect much from her and 17 percent have no expectations at all.

Among those who have expectations, 27 percent said it’s because she is the first female LDP leader, 21 percent responded that they support her political ideology and 20 percent said they expect her to carry out reforms.

Among those who do not have expectations, 36 percent said it would be the same no matter who becomes the leader, while 18 percent cited her personality and image and another 18 percent said they do not expect her to carry out reforms.

When asked which issue they would like Takaichi to tackle as her top priority, 43 percent said high prices, 16 percent answered money and politics and 14 percent said social security and the declining birthrate.
