Japan department store profits fall amid weaker duty-free sales

Two of Japan’s major department store chains reported lower operating profit for the six months to August, mainly due to a decline in sales of duty-free items.

J. Front Retailing, the parent of Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores, says its operating profit skidded about 24 percent from a year earlier to 29.9 billion yen, or 197 million dollars.

Takashimaya says it saw a drop of nearly 18 percent to around 23.6 billion yen, or 155 million dollars.

The companies say the stronger yen and higher-priced luxury brand bags and jewelry led to a drop in sales of duty-free items targeted at travelers from abroad.

“We continue to see inbound visitors to Japan as a growing market in the medium to long term,” said J. Front Retailing President and Representative Executive Officer Ono Keiichi. “But it’s necessary to carefully monitor how average spending per customer moves depending on currency rates.”

The Japan Department Stores Association says all outlets nationwide saw a monthly decline in sales for six consecutive months up to July. It also attributes this to a drop in demand for duty-free items.
