Japan staged a stunning comeback to score a historic victory over powerhouse Brazil in a friendly soccer match in Tokyo on Tuesday.
Japan, ranked No.19 in the world, took on sixth-ranked Brazil, the country with the most World Cup titles under its belt.
Early in the match, Japan showed some stellar counterattacks from its organized defense. But Brazil found an opening in the 26th minute, when it scored off a dazzling combination of passes. Brazil added another goal to finish the first half ahead 2-0.
But gritty Japan fought back in the second half. In the 52nd minute, a tight press forced a Brazilian defender to mishandle a pass, which was promptly seized by Minamino Takumi who put the ball into the net.
Ten minutes later, a cross from substitute Ito Junya led to an equalizer by Nakamura Keito, when Brazil’s attempt to clear the ball wound up as an own goal.
Then, in the 71st minute, Ueda Ayase headed a corner to give Japan the lead, which they defended until the final whistle.
Japan won 3-2, earning its first victory over Brazil in 14 meetings. The Japanese squad drew against Paraguay in another friendly last Friday.
